After undergoing his latest knee surgery, Roger Federer says that “the worst is behind me” and that he hopes to return to the tennis court in 2022.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion announced in August he would be “out many months” following the latest procedure. He last played at Wimbledon, losing in the quarterfinals to Hubert Hurkacz.
“The worst is behind me,” the 40-year-old Federer said in a statement to to Swiss channel SFR Sport. “I’m looking forward to everything that is to come. When you come back after an injury, every day that goes by feels better than the last. It’s an emotional moment.”
“And I have to ask also what Laver thought because he was sitting first row watching Novak play. But what Novak did this year was, of course, truly exceptional.”
