Roger Federer is locked in a historic battle with rivals Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic for supremacy atop men’s tennis, but he knows time is not on his side.
Entering 2020, the 38-year-old Federer is the all-time men’s leader with 20 Grand Slam singles titles, but Nadal (19) and Djokovic (16) are closing fast and they are both significantly younger.
Nadal, 33, would tie Federer atop the all-time list by winning the Australian Open, which begins Jan. 20 in a country ravaged by bush fires. Djokovic, 32, is four behind Federer but won more majors in the last decade (15) than Nadal (13) or Federer (5).
